  • MARY WASHINGTON asparagus crowns are an open-pollinated heirloom variety that yield early in the season.  Asparagus is rich in essential vitamins and minerals.  A long lasting perennial plant, a well kept asparagus bed can last for decades.  The stalks, once harvested, can be enjoyed fresh, grilled, or steamed.  Stalks should be harvested in early spring for a period of 6-8 weeks, before allowing the plant to grow out and fern.  This will allow sunlight and photosynthesis to nourish the roots and plant again, for next year.  The asparagus ferns can be mowed down in the fall.

Mary Washington is approximately 50/50 male/female plants (an heirloom asparagus variety, the kind your grandparents probably grew), so you will have seeds to save for future beds and generations.

Our asparagus plants are shipped bare-root from a licensed and inspected nursery. Stock Quality is 100% guaranteed!  Perennial plants.  Self-pollinating.  1-year plants.

    Best planted in early spring.
