Hydroponic Strawberries

Hydroponic Strawberries

The Benefits of Hydroponic Strawberries

Strawberries are an easy plant to grow in an aquaponic or aeroponic environment. Strawberry plants thrive in hydroponics and is an excellent plant for the beginning entrepreneur to learn with. In part because strawberry plants grown hydroponically grow bigger, faster. When mature, they produce a better quality and juicier fruit in greater abundance than field-grown plants (about 3lbs per plant); these obvious rewards are seen immediately. Many commercial growers are adapting their growing methods from field to facility for this reason. Many start-up farms, restaurants, and produce vendors are seeking this method for the additional advantages of vertical / tiered production, and growing more produce with a smaller amount of land.

Bare-root plants are ideal

Strawberries require 2-3 years to reach maturity and bear fruit. This can be very tedious when starting from seed, and waiting. When using bare-root strawberries, you start out with an established, healthy 1+ year plant, and will harvest within the next year! Also, if you are new to hydroponics, using an established root system can help you overcome the initial losses at the seed and early stages.

Ever-bearing Strawberry Varieties

Ever-bearing strawberry varieties (such as Ozark Beauty or Quinalt) generate several harvests (usually two, once in mid-summer, and once again in early fall). You can expect harvest the very first year of production. You can regulate growth by pinching the blossoms or letting them grow. Each harvest is smaller than the June-bearing varieties, but having these fruits available in the late summer and fall will be a great treat for your table, or remarkable profit at your fruit stand

These runner well, and are ideal (and highly recommended) for hydroponic, auquaponic, and multi-level growing environments, where the benefits of these varieties will be abundant.

Hardy to about 20 degrees Fahrenheit.

Day-neutral Strawberry Varieties

Day-neutral strawberry varieties (such as SeascapeAlbion or Tristar) were developed in the early 60's by select breeding programs in California to produce continuously throughout warmer weather (even above 90F) until frost. They are unaffected by day-length and able to grow in temperatures between 35-89 degrees. You can regulate growth 'clusters' by pinching the blossoms or letting them grow. You can expect three harvest periods the very first year of production. The berries and yields are smaller than the June-bearing varieties, but extending the strawberry season adds remarkable profit at your fruit stand -- imagine if you could provide fresh strawberries throughout the year!
